In the past year some 25 million pieces of baggage were “lost” worldwide. This is about 25% less than the year before stated SITA in its annual baggage report. SITA is a supplier of baggage systems.

Most suitcases that were lost were re-united with their owners within a few days. Of the total amount of baggage 1.1% did not arrive at its destination at the same time as its owners. In 2008 that was 1.48% and the year before that it was 1.8%. The improvement, according to SITA, can be explained due to the reduction in passengers. Passenger numbers were reduced by about 60 million which means some 600.000 fewer suitcases. The number of suitcases that were “lost” last year reduced however from 33 million to 25 million.
